Every month or two I’m going to ask several of my favourite artists to delve into their minds to come up with their best 20 albums, or basically any amount they’d prefer; I’d even allow tracks, singles, anything. A sort of “desert island discs” for artists not likely to be asked by its compere/DJ.
A big thanks to the first of these (dated 28/04/2016), MARK PERRY (leader of ALTERNATIVE TV for the last 40 years!). I think the email proves how hard the task is; I first emailed Mark several months ago and he painstakingly put something together that readers might be interested in. So sorry this has taken so long. The whole process has been a bit of a wrestling match for me and I’ve definitely come to the conclusion that I like far too many albums. Everything I buy and have played over the years seems to have had its moment in the sun. With regards to the whole area of ‘industrial music’, i.e. TG and their followers – Current 93, Coil, Death In June, Whitehouse, Nurse With Wound etc. etc., that’ll have to wait for another list!
The 20 albums I’ve chosen are the ones I seem to grab without thinking, which is always a good sign. I’ve only chosen 1 album per artist to avoid current obsessions, which change on a weekly basis (sometimes daily!)
The list, in no particular order:
Roxy Music – Stranded.
David Bowie – Station To Station.
The Rolling Stones – Exile On main St.
The Mothers Of Invention – We’re Only In It For the Money.
John Stewart – California Bloodlines.
The Byrds – Mr Tambourine Man.
The Beatles – Rubber Soul.
The Velvet Underground – Live 1969.
Lou Reed – Coney Island Baby.
Eric Clapton – 461 Ocean Boulevard.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Tarkus.
Neil Young – On the Beach.
The Who – Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy.
John Sebastian – Tarzana Kid.
Ulver – Wars Of the Roses.
Propaganda – A Secret Wish.
Led Zeppelin – III
Bob Dylan – More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits.
Gram Parsons – Grievous Angel.
Blue Oyster Cult – Secret Treaties.
Feel bad about no room for Can, Elton John, Little Feat, Steely Dan, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, Jimi Hendrix, Yardbirds, Kinks, the Clash, Doll By Doll, Small Faces, and about a hundred others. Maybe another time.
Hope this is ok. Mark.
