9:30 Fly

An unusual and questionable name for a group, it was clear this psych-tinged folk group from Gloucester in Cheltenham, were on a mission to scupper all chances of success. However, Michael Wainwright (vocals) and his wife Barbara Wainwright (vocals, keyboards) set about producing their sole, eponymous set, 9:30 FLY (1972) {*6}, for Ember Records; the other members of the quintet were future JOHN COOPER CLARKE & The Invisible Girls guitarist Lyn Oakey, bassist Gary Charman and drummer Mike Clark.
Lying somewhere between TREES (the folk group that is), JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and the original RENAISSANCE, the album (now collectable and worth over £200) was somewhat patchy in its slight mix of semi-professional technique and monotone vocal cords. The good came through `Brooklyn Thoughts’ (a Euro-only B-side to `September’), while the bad included `Time Of War’ – anything in between was for time to decide.
