Cardi B

Born Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, October 11, 1992, New York City, NY; the daughter of a Trinidadian mother and Dominican father, expletive-ripping hardcore trapper/rapper CARDI B – her nom de plume inspired by Bacardi rum – followed in the feisty, foul-mouthed footsteps of NICKI MINAJ, LIL’ KIM and FOXY BROWN. The former stripper was equally obsessed by the dollar, sex, gangstas and social media stardom, but somehow these traits helped her topped the charts with `Bodak Yellow’ and the infectious Latino-beat, Bad Bunny & J Balvin-assisted diamond cut `I Like It’.
As with the aforesaid MINAJ, CARDI B popped up almost everywhere as a featured artist (a discographer’s nightmare!), applying her not-too-inconsiderable talents for top-selling singles by G-EAZY (`No Limit’), MIGOS (MotorSport’ – alongside MINAJ), BRUNO MARS (`Finesse’), RITA ORA and others (`Girls’), MAROON 5 (`Girls Like You’) and many, many more besides.
On the back of a pair of well-circulated, download-only mixtapes: GANGSTA BITCH MUSIC, VOL.1 (2016) {*5} and GANGSTA BITCH MUSIC, VOL.2 (2017) {*5} – showcasing a number of fringe acts awaiting their turn to sparkle (including hubby OFFSET) – Atlantic Records exploited solo hits up to now, `Bodak…’, `Bartier Cardi’ (feat. 21 SAVAGE) and `Be Careful’, all in order to spark interest in her debut set proper, INVASION OF PRIVACY (2018) {*7}.
Shooting all the way up to #1 (No.5 in the UK), mid-20s starlet CARDI B was rivaling nemesis Nicki in her way to the Grammys. Further spawns found their way to high-end chart places; `Get Up 10’, `Drip’ (ft. MIGOS), the nasty `Bickenhead’, `Best Life’ (feat. CHANCE THE RAPPER), `I Do’ (ft. SZA) and `Ring’ (w/ KEHLANI), just a handful of streamers to gate-crash the US lists.
The much in-demand CARDI B tailed the `Money’ trail (the name of her next solo smash) as a prolific featured artist on hits by Pardison Fontaine (`Backin’ It Up’), DJ Snake (`Taki Taki’), MEEK MILL (`On Me’), the duo City Girls (`Twerk’), and BRUNO MARS (`Please Me’); all culminating with the Grammy-nominated `Clout’ (with OFFSET). Summer 2019 was again a prolific point in time for the breakthrough female rapper; her solo `Press’ being pursued by `Wish Wish’ (led by DJ KHALED), `Rodeo’ (with Lil Nas X), `South Of The Border’ (with ED SHEERAN ft. Camilo Cabello) and so on, and so on.
